Waco: It’s smart to invest in home security system, police say

WACO, Texas. (KWTX) The Waco Police Department urges homeowners to invest in a home security system.

Several Waco residents have already gotten their money’s worth after recent crimes were foiled by security systems.

“We knew exactly who we were looking for based off the homeowners cameras,” Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

“We were able to provide accurate descriptions of clothing. The race of the suspects. Gender of the suspects and that information was provided by homeowners yesterday and it helps capture those criminals. That’s evidence for court that the homeowner has.”

Swanton also said having watchful trusted neighbors are just as beneficial as installing cameras and alarms.

More than 34 million homes and businesses have some sort of electronic surveillance system according to the Electronic Security Association.

If you are a Do-It-yourself person, you can order a system online or buy one from an electronics store.

Last year 600,000 people contacted the Better Business Bureau inquiring about home security systems.

The BBB has advice for first time buyers from professional companies:

• know your security needs and budget
• ask about charges up front
• contact at least 3 companies, make sure they are properly licensed
• make sure companies do background checks
• ask about charges up front
• know your contract

Look for red flags. If a sales person is using high pressure tactics, don’t buy. If the deals are too good to be true, be weary. Check with the BBB to see if the company has a strong history.

The “cooling off rule”: customers have three days to opt out of a purchase form a door-to-door salesman.
